The State of Minnesota has adopted the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 72 as the standard for ALL fire alarm system installations. However, once a system is installed it is a challenge to know and ensure that it continues to comply with code requirements.
UL 72 Certificates
The UL 72 fire alarm certificate program is designed to make sure that fire alarm systems continue to be tested and maintained.
Currently there are 13 cities in Minnesota that require UL 72 Certificates. They are: Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Burnsville, Chanhassen, Chaska, Coon Rapids, Eden Prairie, Golden Valley, Maple Grove, Plymouth, Shakopee, St. Cloud, and St. Anthony.
Even if your municipality does not require a UL 72 certificate, you may still want one. In addition to peace of mind that comes with knowing your system has been tested and maintained properly, your insurance carrier may require a UL 72 certificate and/or offer discounts if you have one.
