Does your fire alarm system use telephone lines to transmit the signal?

August 9, 2017 By Metro Admin

Does your fire alarm system use telephone lines to transmit the signal? If so, the Minnesota State Fire Marshal Division is recommending you plan to transition to Internet or wireless technology:

“The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently announced a plan to discontinue the use of land line telephones (plain old telephone service or POTS) sometime between 2018 and 2020. Since many fire alarm systems throughout Minnesota utilize phone lines to monitor their fire alarm system, it is advantageous for business owners and fire officials to start considering alternatives.”

Read the MN Fire Marshall’s DACT-POTS Memo (https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/sfm/fire-code/Documents/Fire%20Code%20Information%20Sheets/DACT-POTS.pdf)

Metro Alarm & Lock offers a number of different UL listed fire communicators that do not require phone lines, including NFPA 72 compliant radio, Internet Protocol (IP-Based Technology), and cellular communicators.

Moving to a NFPA and UL “Performance-Based Technology” not only provides performance benefits such as speed and reliability, but can also result in huge costs savings from the elimination of dedicated phone lines.

Call Metro Alarm & Lock for a free assessment of your current system and advice on what needs to be upgraded based on your budget and requirements. (888) 794-7196
